As Byrd’s successor, he is expected to provide the vote that finally passes a jobs bill that will extend unemployment benefits that has been stalled by a Republican filibuster.
Carte Goodwin is the young who replaces the old man
When Carte Goodwin is sworn in, the 36-year-old attorney could be the youngest senator filling the seat left vacant by Byrd, who was the oldest senator in office when he died last month at the age of 92. His first vote will be critical, as outlined by CBS News, to senate. The Senate will vote on extending unemployment benefits Tuesday morning after Goodwin is sworn in.
Unemployment benefits being extended not in Republican plans
The seat left vacant by Byrd has left Senate democrats without the 60 votes they need for the unemployment extension. The bill would re-establish an additional 73 weeks of benefits to unemployed workers who cannot find jobs. Republicans have argued the unemployment extension just adds to the national deficit. Democrats think the spending caused by extra unemployment benefits would stimulate the economy. 70 percent of adults are not that concerned about the deficit considering they’re worried about their own employment, according to a Bloomberg poll shown on all247news.com.
Carte Goodwin vs. Joe Manchin for senator?
Carte Goodwin will hold the seat until the November general election. Goodwin was already going for West Virginia’s Senate delegation according to the Huffington Post. Rochelle, his wife, is a director for his colleague, Senator Jay Rockefeller. Friday, Rockefeller called Goodwin “unquestionably among West Virginia’s best and brightest” as the new pick for Senate. Goodwin is not expected to run in November. Joe Manchin already plans on taking the seat in Senate.
